Open Source Licensing

Fleer is an open music commons. All content is licensed exclusively for AI model training.

Our Philosophy

Fleer is built on the belief that music AI should be open and accessible to everyone. By licensing music specifically for AI training and requiring all trained models to be open source, we create a virtuous cycle that benefits the entire community.

Content License

When uploading to Fleer, content is licensed exclusively for AI model training purposes:

AI Training License

Required

By uploading content to Fleer, you grant a license that permits:

  • AI model training only - Content may be used exclusively to train AI models
  • No other uses - The license does not extend to reproduction, distribution, performance, or other uses beyond training
  • Open source requirement - Any models trained on this data must be released as open source

Important: This is a narrow license specifically for AI training. It does not grant general rights to use, distribute, or modify the content in other ways.

Model License Requirements

Any AI model trained on Fleer data must be released as open source under a permissive license such as:

  • MIT License - Very permissive, allows commercial use
  • Apache 2.0 - Permissive with patent protection
  • GPL v3 - Copyleft license requiring derivatives to be open
  • Creative Commons (CC-BY or CC-BY-SA) - For model weights

Important: Closed-source or proprietary models trained on Fleer data violate our terms. We rely on community reporting and good faith compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I upload copyrighted music?

No. You must own the rights or have permission to license the music for AI training. Uploading copyrighted material violates our terms and may result in legal action.

Can I revoke my license grant later?

No. The AI training license is irrevocable. Once you upload, you cannot revoke the license. This ensures researchers can rely on the dataset for their work.

What if someone trains a closed model on Fleer?

We rely on community reporting and good faith. While we can't prevent all violations, we maintain a public list of compliant models and can issue public notices about violations.

Can commercial companies use Fleer data?

Yes, as long as they release their trained models as open source. Commercial use of open source models is allowed under most open licenses (MIT, Apache 2.0, etc.).
